Your Basic Sun Girl
I love The Sun card in the tarot. Whether I draw in upright or in reverse, this card delights me to no end when it comes up for my daily tarot card. This is a pretty basic reaction, am I right? I mean, who doesn’t love the sun? It keeps us warm! It lights up our days! It makes the plants grow! It got me thinking that I’m a pretty basic bitch for loving The Sun.
So what? I can be basic right? Even a weirdo tarot reader can act totally normal and mainstream. We don’t have to be eccentric or esoteric at all times. If a tarot reader can be a happy to see the Sun card, then each of us should feel free to love what we love.
That’s the simple message for today. If something wonderful happens to you, something small or large, that you just love, revel in it. Enjoy it! Life is too short to wait for huge moments and then to deprive ourselves of deep satisfaction in big achievements. We have the opportunity to be alive and present to what life has to offer, let’s notice it all and be grateful.
The Sun is also a welcome card to draw in a reading, most of the time. Don’t get me wrong, I love to draw The Tower as well and lay on some deep tarot reflections with The Death card or the III of Swords. I wouldn’t have gotten into tarot reading if I didn’t want to have uncomfortable and soul-searching conversations, but sometimes you just want to give someone a pleasant, easy, and happy message. Hello Sun! This is a happy reading!
I’ve never had someone respond to drawing The Sun card in a negative way. Sure, The Sun illuminates, it brings things into focus and highlights, but generally it likes to point out the good things. The Sun shows an enchanting opportunity. The Sun shines on something you may have forgotten that could be useful now. Yes, something may come to light that was once in the dark, but there’s no reason to fear this new information, it’s usually something useful and positive that you’ve been overlooking.
When The Sun shines on you it makes you want to show up, to be brave, to be in the spotlight. This can feel absolutely great if you’ve been afraid to stand out or to be seen. The Sun can make you realize that you are worth seeing, that people should see you, that’s it’s ok to be yourself. Actually, it’s more than ok to be yourself, it’s fabulous. You’re a star! You should shine your light bright and bold and beautiful. You’re a gift!
The Sun also comes up in a reading when there is a good time in store, especially fun in the sun. As I mentioned in last week’s blog post, I am currently traveling in Brasil. That is a Sun time for me (and let’s hope the sun is even shining in the sky because I wouldn’t mind some beach days), a time of flourishing, of having fun, of thriving. The Sun lifts our moods, making amusement and joy more accessible and free flowing. When the Sun is out, it’s time for a party!

The Sun gives us energy, it is a source of life giving vitality, which makes us come fully alive. That energy can be contagious, inspiring those around us to delight in life as well. The Sun says that you can be a light house. Show up as your authentic, bright, and shiny self and it will draw people to you and show them how to be their own version of that. You’re not afraid to show up and showing up makes the world a better place.
Some people may look askance at all this positivity. Is there some spiritual bypassing going on here? Are you just blathering pat affirmations without substance? Are you glossing over the hard parts and just focusing on the good stuff? Shouldn’t we take life seriously?
Listen, life doesn’t have to be hard and serious all the time. Life is hard enough without us adding even more hardship to the heap! Don’t mistrust a good time just because other times are tough. You can even have a blast in the middle of a bad season. You can laugh while you are grieving. You can have something good happen while you are still dealing with something bad happening. This can all be mixed up and it will be all mixed up. Life doesn’t wait for you to deal with one thing before it hands you another thing. The Sun asks you to sieze those good moments even in the midst of all of the stuff that is horrible, hard, or heartbroken.
What about The Sun in reverse, you might ask? Well, I’m still gonna layer on the positivity here and interpret a Sun in reverse as a surprise good time. The Sun reversed is the unexpected or even the opposite of what you may have been hoping for, suddenly turning out to be the best thing ever. And not in a hard lessons learned kind of way where you struggle through something and come out the other side better for it. No, The Sun reversed is more into instant gratification. This is a when you miss your train but then see your best friend on the next one that comes into the station. Or your plans are canceled for Friday night but you then get invited to something even better. This is your favorite restaurant having no reservations available but then you eat at a new place you instantly love.

I know those might sound like little things, but these are the things that make life magical. Maybe you really needed that hug from your best friend, or to meet someone new at an unexpected party, or a favorite new pad thai take out spot. These things can put you in the right mindset to be able to do hard things later. They fill up your cup. They bring out the light inside of you that you need to shine. The Sun reversed can, of course, herald much bigger moments of illumination and discovery, but you definitely won’t miss the message there. It’s all about thinking you’re going to get one good thing and then finding out you got something even better.
The Sun is shining outside as I write this, so I’m going to go seize the day and take Cosmo on a walk in the woods as soon as I schedule this post. As you’re reading this, hopefully I’m also again out in the woods, maybe climbing towards a waterfall in the Chapada dos Veadeiros in Brazil. (Look it up, it’s a beautiful area!) Enjoy your own time in the sun and enjoy being whatever kind of basic bitch you are, too. I love The Sun and I’m not ashamed. Shine bright!
