Top Five Tarot Cards for Travel
I’m off on a trip! I love to travel! Sometimes when I contemplate what my life purpose might be, I wonder if it is to travel. Perhaps my reason for being here is to see the world. I just want to look at it, all of it. I’m here to witness it as it is.
Then I think that that isn’t quite what is meant by a life purpose. Does the world even need to be seen? What exactly does it gain by my traveling around it? What’s this “purpose” I’m trying to conjure up out of a love of travel?
But, I digress. Today, I want to share with you another entry in the Top Five Tarot Cards series. The theme shall be tarot cards that indicate travel because I am currently off on a trip to Brasil to visit some of my favorite places and discover some new ones. This is my fourth trip to Brazil and hopefully not my last!
Are you hoping to plan a trip in the future or do you simply want to know which tarot cards would indicate that a trip is on the horizon? Let’s see what we’ve got!
The Fool
The Fool tarot card from the Rider Waite Smith tarot deck.
The Fool is so game for a trip. This guy will go anywhere, anytime. He’s always got his bags packed and one foot out the door. The world is his oyster and he’s ready to shuck! The Fool is a free spirit. You can’t keep this traveler in one spot for long. He will constantly be bounding from location to location, ready to soak it all in, but also let the adventure lead where it may. This is the type of trip that doesn’t need much of an itinerary, just a desire to go. You’ll figure it out when you get there!
The Fool is intensely curious. There’s no corner too obscure to investigate, no destination without the promise of adventure, and no set back that can’t be turned into an escapade. This is a great energy to have when you’re traveling. No matter what plans you might make in advance, things can change fast once you’re actually there. The Fool will make the most of any circumstances that he finds himself in, be it a delayed flight, horrible weather, or even a travel illness. It’s all part of the experience!
II of Wands
II of Wands from the Rider Waite Smith tarot deck.
The II of Wands holds the world in her hands and a vast sense of discovery in her heart. She is ready to make plans, choose destinations, and chart a course. The travel bug has definitely bitten her, and she can’t wait to hit the road. There is an exquisite sense of anticipation inherent in this card, that lovely excitement of a trip on the horizon. The lead up to the trip is an integral and enjoyable part of the travel experience.
The II of Wands takes the endless enthusiasm of The Fool and makes some actual plans! Yes, there is something to be said for the spontaneous travel passion of The Fool, ready to roll with the punches and adapt to whatever the trip presents, but there is also a beauty in a carefully crafted itinerary that hits all the highlights of a destination. The II of Wands books tickets in advance to save money and make the best connections. The II of Wands reads the guidebook to know which neighborhood to stay in, how to navigate transportation, and when the sites will be open. Perhaps there is even a chance of a guided tour to learn the inside scoop and history of a location.
The II of Wands isn’t fooled into thinking plans will turn out exactly as imagined or written out. There is a real sense of adventure to this card that says even the best laid plans can be thrown out the window when you arrive and magnificent opportunities beyond your wildest imagination present themselves. You’re ready to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. You can plan all your life (and do just that if you enjoy it!), but the II of Wands knows that when you arrive, it’s best to have an open mind and see what you can discover!
III of Wands
The III of Wands from the Rider Waite Smith tarot deck.
The III of Wands has a very similar vibe to the II of Wands, but takes it a step further. Literally, this guy is one step ahead, making solid plans, adapting to current circumstances, and expanding the trip to take on even wider proportions. This is the card that says, if you play your cards right, the trip doesn’t have to end any time soon. You can use your grit, determination, adaptability, and resources to take this trip to the next level of adventure.
The III of Wands wants you to think big, so study up and expand your awareness of what is possible. If you want to travel long-term, this is the card you want to see. It has the gumption to get out of your regular environment and thrive in the unknown. This card has the vision to see yourself on the road indefinitely, or at least planning a series of trips far into the future that will expand your knowledge, worldview, and wisdom.
The Chariot
The Chariot tarot card from the Rider Waite Smith tarot deck.
The Chariot is pure movement. It says that it’s time to get going. This guy has itchy feet that never want to stand still for long. “Life should be a never-ending road trip” is the motto of The Chariot. This card could indicate a trip over land, probably by car, bus, train, or even horse! Hopefully that trip is in your own personal vehicle, maybe even one you can sleep in and live out of while you drive around exploring (I wrote a post about this way back when, when I was living in a van).
The Chariot has momentum. This card can show up for you when you’re already in the midst of a trip and it advises you to keep your energy up. Keep going. Keep exploring. This card has some serious determination, which sometimes you need big time when you’re out on the road and the constant movement is starting to wear on you. If you’re on a short trip, you gotta just push through and see it all without the kind of rest you might usually get. If you’re on a longer trip, pace yourself and make sure you’re getting rest when you can. Overall though, The Chariot tells you that it’s all action and you’re in for an adventure of seeing so much incredible new stuff! Keep it movin’!
VI of Swords
The VI of Swords from the Rider Waite Smith tarot deck.
The VI of Swords is ready to cross into uncharted territory. This tarot card can indicate a trip that holds deep significance. There is something personal and meaningful to be learned from moving from one place to another. There is a sense that this trip is a rite of passage in some way. Going away, experiencing whatever it is that you will go through on your trip, and then returning home is a journey of consequence. There is meaning to glean from your travels.
The lessons learned on this type of trip can change your whole outlook on life. The VI of Swords has the vibe of “once you see it, you can never un-see it”. There’s no going back, you’re forever changed. And generally, this will be in a good way. The changes in you mentality can motivate you to shift your life in a positive new direction that aligns with the person you are now that you’ve had this travel experience and learned and grown so much.
The VI of Swords is also the card that shows up for travel over water. That could mean a boat trip, sure, were you thinking of taking a cruise? This would be a good card to get if you want to say yes to that trip. It could also be an airplane trip over some water, which is a lot of places when you start in the United States. So, when you see the IV of Swords think of long distance travel, versus a closer destination. It’s time to see what’s way off past the horizon.
