Summer Coming in Hot Like the Knight of Wands: Part 2

Ok, we’re back and it is time for further exploration of the Knight of Wands. As I was saying from the last post, the Knight of Wands is full of fire energy. Where I originally intended to go with that thought was that, besides being over the top, the Knight of Wands can also be pulled in every direction. He is not only really into doing things, he is also really into doing A LOT of things. Everything lights him up a little bit in some way. The world is a jewel box of shiny options and each holds some promise to delight and enliven the soul.

I’m a person with too many hobbies. That’s right, I’m not going to take that back and say I have a lot of hobbies, or a bucket load of hobbies, or ton of hobbies. I’m just going to say I have TOO MANY. I really need to get par it back a bit. It’s overwhelming and exhausting and overall, nothing seems to get completed. I even wrote a post about how to not finish things here.

I actually really do want to finish things, or get good a something, or take it to the next level. This doesn’t seem to be possible when I am constantly chasing after the next interesting, shiny thing and dropping all the other hobbies in the meantime. Then, when I finally get back to whatever it was I was doing, it takes a while to get back to where I was at before because I’ve forgotten where I left off.

Take this blog post for instance. I started it over a month ago and I had an idea of where it was going and how it related to the last post about the Knight of Wands. Then I got distracted by planting a garden, and making a YouTube video, and going on a bunch of trips, etc. and I fell off the writing wagon. Today, I finally felt like I had the headspace to write and it took me almost a half an hour to find this document, read over what I’d already written about the Knight of Wands, and then organize my thoughts about what to write next. So now, the post is getting written about 5 weeks later than intended.

There’s a trend out there of calling people who have a lot of interests “multi-passionate.” Ok, if that’s how you feel and calling yourself “multi-passionate” makes your soul sing, go for it. I just don’t like that word as a concept. Or maybe, I just don’t relate to it- perhaps that’s more accurate. I’m not multi-passionate. I’m a dilettante. I’m kinda into a lot of things. I’m spread thin over a wide area.

What I’m getting at here is that I wouldn’t really call myself “passionate” about my hobbies. A few of them, yes, but not all of them. I’m just kinda interested, or tickled by, or like the results of many of my hobbies. They’re ok. I don’t want to do them all the time or get really good at them or spend all my time doing them. I don’t get immersed in such a way that time just passes without my noticing as I’m fully engaged with my hobby.

I feel like this is Knight of Wands energy, to be kinda into a lot of things. He likes all different kinds of activities. He likes eating at every kind of restaurant. He can see the appeal of different careers, different travel destinations, different fashion trends. He calls himself a dog person and a cat person. He doesn’t see any discrepancy or problems with spreading his interests thinly all over the place. Everything is worth a shot, holds some kind of curiosity, or is fun enough to dedicate a few hours of his life pursuing.

There is something positive to be said for being curious. It makes life very interesting for one thing. I am a person who can read a book about almost anything, listen to any kind of music, try out endless different jobs, and have a conversation with any type of person. I like being curious, that’s not the problem, I just don’t like the general lack of depth. I’m constantly wondering how I can get really deeply into something, really know it or know how to do it, but have it not take too much time or energy. Ha! And even if I do dedicate a long period of time to it, I want it to then just be set without having to practice or keep up to date. If I could do it once, I’d like my brain to retain that ability indefinitely.

Unfortunately, my brain doesn’t work like that, so I forget things just as fast as the next person. This doing and then moving on is both a blessing and a curse of Knight of Wands energy. The good news is that you did something and it was fun! The bad news is that it might not amount to much in the long run. There’s a distinct lack of long-term planning with the Knight of Wands. Time is flying by! Let’s do this thing and move on! That can be perfect energy when something is basically a one and done, like painting the house for instance, but doesn’t work great with other activities, like learning a language.

In the first post in this series we got into the association between the Knight of Wands and radiant summertime energy. Now it is the height of summer here in Vermont! The Sun just entered the vibrant fire sign of Leo and it’s all about being in the spotlight, taking up space, showing up for what lights you up! I’m not trying to be negative about the Knight of Wands in this post, I’m trying to show you how his energy can have a positive or negative association in your mind depending upon your personality and even just your current mood or season. Sometimes I want this fire energy to make me leap into action in the pursuit of a concrete, short-term goal. Other times I’m looking for follow through and prolonged focus and pulling the Knight of Wands would illicit a groan of frustration that I’m probably going to be my usual fleeting curiosity self.

One thing to keep in mind when you pull the Knight of Wands and feel like it’s energy is pointing to you- realize that you can take advantage of this energy in a positive way. If you point yourself at something interesting, short-term, and exciting, you’re likely to make big strides. The Knights are all about action after all, so take advantage of this get up and go jolt of energy! It may be best to avoid or wait on starting any task that is long-term, or overly ambitious, because generally this energy won’t last for long. Perhaps summer feels like a long time to you, but it’s actually only 3 months, right? What can you get done in that time frame, realistically? Keep it contained and keep it simple. Don’t burn yourself out!

Remember to enjoy your summer (or whatever season of your life you are in at the present moment when you feel called to read about the Knight of Wands here). Leo season is a time for joy and exuberance. It is a time to develop confidence, to have faith in yourself, to believe in your abilities, and to put fears aside. I’m going to try and not worry too much about what’s getting done and what’s not getting done. I’ll make priorities (a very few!) and let the rest go.  Let’s focus on the positive aspects of Knight of Wands energy and invite those into these last long summer nights. It’s time for the height of revelry, let that be your guide.
