Summer Coming in Hot Like the Knight of Wands: Part 1

Last week we had a potent Full Moon in Sagittarius. It was vivacious. It was fiery. It was hype. I got a stomach bug and didn’t get around to posting the great blog idea I had in mind about how the Full Moon in Sag energy was super Knight of Wands.

Oh well, I’m getting around to writing it now. That was a vicious stomach bug and I was pretty much incapacitated for a few days. But I’m still very much feeling the Knight of Wands energy in the air these days as summer begins in the northern hemisphere. Perhaps you too are feeling this change of season as an in rush of fire energy?

Fire energy is inspired. It is action-oriented. It has more get-up-and-go than usual. Fire energy ignites a passion inside of us to do, explore, talk, dance, roast a marshmallow, and go on a midnight adventure. I’m suddenly remembering this activity we used to do at Girl Scout camp growing up. We would build a little raft and then on the raft we’d build a fire and then we’d push our floating fire out onto the lake and roast marshmallows over it while swimming (with life jackets on).

That’s what this season feels like to me- a bit over the top. You could just build a fire and roast a marshmallow over it, but why not take it up a notch and pair it with another delightful activity, like floating/swimming on a lake. Things feel extra right now and that feeling of extra is very much personified in the Knight of Wands.

I think we all have a bit of this Knight of Wands over the top vibe somewhere in our hearts. We want to mash up all the things we love and do everything at once. We want to go all out. We want to overextend- consequences be damned! Sure, the consequences may be acknowledged, but they are always brushed aside in the interest of experiencing big time fun. It will all be worth it in the end- probably, I mean maybe, I mean we’ll see when the times comes…

What is it that you are extra into right now? What makes you feel like you’re accessing your inner Knight of Wands? It’s summer time- let’s go!

Even if you’re a very down to earth person, we all have this Knight’s vitality in some way, shape or form. Maybe you’ve even externalized this energy by having a friend or other person in your life who is ultra Knight of Wands energy. You think they are wild and maybe even insane! But you keep them around because they are so much fun. You may not fully understand it but they express a part of you that needs to show fire energy.

When it comes to the court cards in the tarot (Pages, Knights, Queens, Kings), they usually represent people. I think we can each take on the characteristics of any of the court cards given the right circumstances. When you draw the Knight of Wands in a reading it’s a signal to ask yourself if you’re the one riding a wild horse or if this is someone who is prominent in your life right now. That will help you determine how to interpret the card.

If I draw the Knight of Wands in a reading, I usually like to start interpreting the card by thinking about how I personally am being a Knight of Wands at the moment. Does it feel like an energy I want to claim as my own? How am I lit up? How am I living out my passions? What inspiration is all around me that I can use to full advantage right now? What fun and excitement can I express or invite into my life? The Knight of Wands feels aspirational, like I could try anything, or anything could happen- in a fun way. I can fully grasp the ephemeral, light-hearted nature of life. Nothing is so serious or important that I have to sacrifice the enjoyment of life, the pure wonder and spectacle of the good time I could be having.

Of course there are times when you draw this card and you know that it means you’re being over the top. You need to focus but you’ve scattered your energy trying to maximize fun and adventure. You want to settle down, be practical and grounded but you are restless and frivolous and can’t sit still. Every time you start to taking a sensible step in the right direction, you have a knee-jerk reaction to sprint in the wrong direction just for shits and giggles. Your impulse is to be wild and free but at the same time that feels super irresponsible and you’re trying so hard to be an adult!

If you go through this self-reflection and don’t feel a personal connection to the Knight of Wands energy, you’ll probably notice in the process who does represent the Knight of Wands in your life. Maybe you’re met a new interesting person, or your partner is being extra attractive these days, or your kids are being wild ambitious creators, or your boss is all over the place, or your friends suddenly want to be spontaneous and have adventures. Who is the Knight of Wands in your life right now? How do you want to interact with them? It could be a good idea to glom onto the fire energy of another person in your life who is letting off sparks. You’ll have more fun, get more done, feel more alive, etc. Why not be on the lookout for how to invite more fun into your life this summer?!

Summer is heating up and its time to get into action. It’s time to be confident. It’s time to put aside fears and go forth with enthusiasm. It’s time to show your exuberance! Doesn’t that sound nice? I feel like the Knight of Wands can get kind of a bad rap as a shallow charmer, or a lover then a leaver. But I also think that alluring fire energy he puts out can be useful, helpful, fun, and enlivening. If you’re feeling a little down and out, why not channel some Knight of Wands vibes and see if you can’t get yourself out of a low point? No harm in trying.

I actually had a different angle in mind for relating to the Knight of Wands for this post, but I got deep into the hot fiery energy aspect of the Knight of Wands and couldn’t stop exploring it.
